On the morning of April 28th, the Shanghai High People's Court (SHPC) and Xiamen University jointly held a signing ceremony. Jia Yu, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and President of the SHPC, and Zhang Rong, Secretary of the Party Committee of Xiamen University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the signing ceremony and delivered speeches. Wang Liqiu, Member of the Party Leadership Group and Head of the Political Department of the SHPC, and You Yancheng, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Xiamen University, signed the strategic cooperation agreement on behalf of both parties. Heads of the General Office and the Cadre Training Division of the SHPC, as well as heads from the Xiamen University Office, the Office of Domestic Cooperation, and the School of Law of Xiamen University, attended the signing ceremony.

Xiamen University has long been renowned for its academic prowess as the "Strength of the South." As an essential institution for legal education in China, it has developed distinctive characteristics in fields such as international law, fiscal and tax law, and maritime law. As a judicial authority located at the forefront of China's reform and opening-up, Shanghai courts have, in recent years, amassed extensive practical experience in areas such as financial trials, intellectual property protection, and foreign-related maritime jurisdiction. The signing of the agreement is an important measure to fully deepen strategic cooperation and jointly cultivate legal talents through the combination of "the wisdom of Shanghai courts and the strength of Xiamen University." The cooperation agreement encompasses ten key areas, including theoretical research, academic exchanges, practical seminars, mutual hiring and exchanges, think-tank sharing, collaborative training, talent cultivation, curriculum development, practical teaching, and digital platform construction. Additionally, it also establishes mechanisms for regular liaison, irregular mutual visits, and project advancement.

In his speech, Jia Yu put forward three expectations for the deepening cooperation between the two parties: First and foremost, they must solidify professional foundations and establish a "community" dedicated to the joint cultivation of legal professionals. Bidirectional exchanges facilitate the complementary integration of faculty strengths, thereby jointly elevating the quality of talent cultivation. Secondly, they shall empower regional cooperation and set a "new benchmark" for cooperation between Shanghai and Xiamen, serving as a benchmark in jointly advancing national strategies and in collectively tackling judicial challenges. Lastly, they shall deepen their cooperative mechanisms and achieve "groundbreaking results" in university-court partnership. The court's "cases” will be transformed into the university's "educational resources” and the university's "academic insights" into the court's “practical solutions", thereby contributing the wisdom of Shanghai courts and the strength of Xiamen University to the construction of the rule of law in China.
